The direct corporate ancestor of SunTrust Bank is the Trust Company of Georgia, which was founded in 1891. In 1985, Trust Company of Georgia and SunBanks, Inc of Florida merged to form the present SunTrust Banks, Inc. Shortly after the merger in 1986, SunTrust acquire Third National Corporation based in Tennessee. The bank further purchased Crestar Financial of Virginia in 1998. The company also acquired National Commerce Financial Corporation based in Memphis in 2004 for $7 billion.
