ICICI Bank is the leading private sector bank in India in terms of market capitalization. It is also the second largest banking firm in the country with total assets of Rs. 3,562.28 billion (US$ 77 billion) as on December 31, 2009. With head office in Mumbai, ICICI Bank branches are spread all across India and it has a large network of over 1,660 branch locations and more than 4,883 ATMs. Moreover, the bank has its presence in 18 different countries and its subsidiaries are located in United Kingdom, Canada and Russia. ICICI Bank History
The history of ICICI Bank dates back to 1955 when The Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India Limited was established with the initiative of World Bank, Indian Government and the representatives of the Indian Industry. The main objective of the corporation was to create a financial institution that will provide medium and long term financing options to businesses in India. In 1994, ICICI established its banking subsidiary under the name ICICI Banking Corporation. Later, it was renamed to ICICI Bank and it was given a separate legal entity to conduct normal banking operations such as taking deposits, offering credit cards and car loans etc. During its long history, the bank went through several acquisitions and expansions. In 2003, ICICI established subsidiaries in United Kingdom, Canada and offshore banking unit in Singapore.
