Syndicate Bank is one of the oldest commercial banks in India. It was formerly known as Canara Industrial and Banking Syndicate Limited during the time of its inception. It was established in Mangalore in 1925 by three prominent individuals Upendra Ananth Pai, Dr. T.M.A. Pai and Vaman Srinivas Kudva. Syndicate Bank along with 13 other major commercial banks was nationalized by the Indian Government on 19th July 1969. The bank starts its operations with just a mere capital of Rs. 8000/- under the leadership of the three visionaries. The primary objective of the bank was to offer financial support to the local weavers who were facing the crisis in the then handloom industry.
Syndicate Bank History
After its inception in July 1925 Syndicate Bank commenced its business operation as a joint stock company with just a single employee. The first branch of the bank was opened in 1928 at Brahmavar, a semi urban area in Dakshina Kannada District. In 1937, Syndicate Bank became one of the members of the Clearing House located at Bombay. The bank further opened 28 bank branches in just a day in several rural areas. During the period from 1953-1964, the bank acquired assets and liabilities of two local banks, Southern India Apex Bank Ltd. and Maharastra Apex Bank Ltd. Moreover, 20 other banks merged with Syndicate Bank during this period. During the time of its nationalization in 1969, the bank had 306 branches out of which 66% were located in semi urban and rural areas.

Today the bank has grown into a full fledge banking institution with a large network of over 2125 branches. Out of these branch locations, 1523 branches offer core banking and e-banking services to millions of customers. Syndicate Bank also has expanded its operation in overseas and it has a branch in London. Moreover, the bank operates National Exchange Co. in Doha and Musandam Exchange Co. in Muscat. It opened its 1000th branch in 1978 at Hauz Khas, Delhi. The 2000th branch of the bank was opened at Tondiarpet Chennai on 23rd March 2006.
