Oriental Bank of Commerce is one of the well known public sector banks in India. The history of the bank dates back to 1943 when it was established on 19th February of the same year in Lahore (currently in Pakistan). The bank begins its operation under the leadership of Rai Bahadur Lala Sohan Lal, the founder and the first Chairman of the banking firm. Just within four years of its establishment, the bank had to face the harsh consequences of the partition. OBC branches in Pakistan were closed down and the head office was shifted to Amritsar. In its 67 years of existence, Oriental Bank of Commerce had experienced many ups and downs.
Oriental Bank of Commerce History
In OBC Bank's history, the phase from 1970 - 76 is considered as the most challenging period. At one time the profit of the bank plunge down to Rs. 175, which prompted the owner to sell or close the bank. However, the employees and pioneers of the bank step forward to rescue it. The performance of the bank improved tremendously due to the joint efforts of the employees. On 15th April, 1980, the bank was nationalized and the then overall working capital was Rs. 483 crores. In just a decade, the bank became one of the prominent banks in the country. The bank also progressed on various fronts like crossing business mark of Rs. 1.50 lacs, reaching 100% CBS, establishing new wings in Rural, Retail and Priority Sector.
