HDFC Bank History

HDFC Bank came into existence in the year 1994 when Housing Development Finance Corporation established it after receiving "in principle" approval to set up private sector bank from Reserve Bank of India. The bank begins its operation as a commercial bank in the beginning of the year 1995 with the assistance of liberation policies of RBI. In 2000, HDFC Bank merged with Times Bank Ltd (promoted by Bennett, Coleman & Co. / Times Group) and this was considered as a milestone transaction in Indian banking history. In 2008, HDFC Bank acquired Centurion Bank based in Punjab and with this its branches reached to over 1,000 in number. The acquisition of Centurion Bank let the bank to increase its branch network, customer base and geographic reach.
