Punjab National Bank is the third largest nationalized bank in India and it has the second largest network of branches across the country. According to a recent survey, the bank has assets of more than Rs. 2,46,900 crore and has about 4668 branches including 3 overseas offices with 238 extension counters. PNB Branches and subsidiaries are also located in foreign locations like UK, Hong Kong, Kabul, Dubai, Oslo, Almaty and Shanghai. With over 38 million customers the bank retains its leadership position by fulfilling the banking needs of the majority. Other than offering a complete range of banking products, PNB is involved in credit card and debit card business, life and non-life insurance business, bullion business and gold coins and asset management business.
PNB History
Punjab National Bank was registered under the Indian Companies Act on 19th May 1894 with its head office in Anarkali Bazaar Lahore. The founders of the bank includes several prominent leaders of the Swadeshi movement like Lala HarKishen, Shri Kali Prosanna Roy, Dyal Singh Majithia, Bakshi Jaishi Ram and many others. In 1904, PNB opened its branches in Peshawar and Karachi. Later in 1940, the bank acquired Bhagwan Dass Bank which was a schedule bank based in Delhi. The bank lost its office premises in Lahore during the partition of Pakistan and India in 1947. However, the bank continued its operation in Pakistan.
