Union Bank of India History

Union Bank of India was established as a limited company on 11th November 1919 in Mumbai by none other than Mahatma Gandhi. In 1947, the bank had just 4 branches that worked in key trade centers. When Union Bank of India (UBI) was nationalized by the Indian government in 1969, it had around 240 branches located in 28 states. The bank merged with Miraj State Bank in 1985 and acquired Sikkim Bank if 1999 on request by Reserve Bank of India. Union Bank of India also opened representative offices in Peoples Republic of China, Abu Dhabi, Shanghai and United Arab Emirates in 2007. It opened its first foreign branch in Hong Kong in 2008. Moreover in 2009, the bank opened a representative office in the Australian Capital, Sydney.
