Canara Bank is one of the major commercial banks of India. Established in 1906, it is also one among the oldest banks in the country. As on December 2009, Canara Bank had a large network of about 2861 bank branches located in diverse parts of the country. The bank is headquartered in Bangalore and it also has a number of international locations in various centers including London, Shanghai, Moscow, Hong Kong, Doha and Dubai. With overall business of around Rs. 2 trillion, Canara Bank is one of India's largest nationalized commercial banks. The branches of the bank are located in most of the urban cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune and Ahmedabad.
Canara Bank History
Sri. Ammembai Subba Rao Pai, a philanthropist, founded the bank in 1906 under the name of Canara Bank Hindu Permanent Fund. The bank became a limited company in 1910 and then its name was changed into Canara Bank after nationalization in 1969. During 1958, Canara Bank acquired G. Raghumathmul Bank in Hyderabad under the orders of Reserve Bank of India. On 19th July 1969, Canara Bank was nationalized with 13 other commercial banks by the Government of India. The bank acquired Lakshmi Commercial Bank and establishes a subsidiary in Hong Kong in 1985. Later in 2008-09, the bank established its third foreign branch in Shanghai.
