Axis Bank, formerly called UTI Bank, had started its operations in the year 1994, after the Indian Government permitted new private banks to be recognized. The bank was sponsored mutually by the Officer of the Specified Undertaking of the Unit Trust of India (UTI-I), General Insurance Company Limited, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), The New India Assurance Company, National Insurance Company Limited, The Oriental Insurance Corporation and United India Insurance Company. The bank had altered its name to Axis in April, 2007. Shikha Sharma joined the bank as MD & CEO on April 20, 2009. The bank had a net profit of Rs. 1,812.93 crores & a total income of Rs. 13,745.04 crores as on March 31, 2009.
